SABEN LEATHER CARE

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SABEN BAG

Congratulations on your new Saben bag, You Lucky Lucky Thing. We think our pieces are a bit special and hope you do too. It’s wonderful knowing your bag will last the distance and become a much–loved treasure in your wardrobe for years to come.

Like with most treasures, you want to ensure they are looked after with kindness and care, our handbags are no different.

We’ve created an easy to follow care guide to keeping your bag looking as fresh as the day you got it.

If you have any questions about caring for your bag, let us know, our team at the Ponsonby store are on hand to answer questions or queries you have. You can reach them on (09) 376 1007 or info@saben.co.nz.

PREVENTION IS THE KEY

Prevention is better than cure, right? If you give your bag the TLC it needs early on in life, it will stay fresh as a daisy for many outings and adventures to come. The best way to protect your special Saben is to use a protective spray: All bags, (whether they are suede or leather), need to be protected with a water proofer before use. We recommend our Saben Total Protector Spray, this is an invisible waterproofing spray for all smooth, suede and nubuck leathers. To keep the protection going, re-apply protector every 3-4 weeks to keep the leather soft and resilient.

Remember your leather shoes need love too! Give them a good spray after you’ve taken them out of the box and they’re ready to go!

TREAT YOUR BAG RIGHT

We all love a good moisturiser, so do our handbags. Using a mild yet effective nourishing gel (we love our Saben Nourishing Gel), will clean and nourish your bag. Applying this cleansing moisturiser every 6-8 weeks (using a polishing cloth) will help restore that ‘fresh from the boutique’ glisten and shine to your bag.

If your bag has picked up marks or stains on its adventures, these can be easily buffed out using our Saben Ultimate Cleanser – it’s tough on stains but gentle on leather and perfect for removing dirt and water stains. Gently rub the cleanser in a circular motion over the area that needs refreshing and voila! Good as new. Be sure to test your care products on a spot of the leather that’s not easily visible (like an inside seam or pocket) before you go to town on the rest of your bag. Always apply your cleaning and protective products onto a soft cloth and use that to gently cleanse and clean (don’t apply it onto your bag).

WEAR WITH CARE

Remember that feeling you get when you’ve had one too many slices of pizza and you feel like you might burst? Our bags feel the same way when you cram too many essentials into them. We know it’s tempting to cart everything around (kitchen sink included), please do your bag a favour and try to keep the load reasonable.
Our bags are a luxury item and will last a  long life if they’re treated right. Overfilling your bag can put stress on the seams, fastenings and straps and distort the shape. Making sure you bag isn’t over-stuffed will ensure it lasts the distance.

WORN OUT SHOES CAN BE SOLE DESTROYING

Shoes deserve love too! Keep you leather sneakers and slides looking fresh with the same leather cleanser and spray. Give them a good spray after unboxing and use the leather cleanser to buff out marks and scuffs.

KEEP YOUR BAG LOOKING LOVELY

Here are Roanne's top tips for keeping your bag looking lovely and lasting the distance.

  • Light coloured leathers should be treated with extra care – avoid wearing your new dark denim jeans with a white or light coloured bag as dye can (and probably will) rub off on to the leather. Denim dye is as stubborn as a mule and will refuse to budge.
  • White Handbags are extremely sensitive to light, and the leather will turn a yellow-ish colour if it is exposed for too long to spotlights and fluorescent lamps.
  • Avoid handling your bag after applying foundation, perfume, body or hand creams. The oils in these products can stain the leather.
  • When out and about or at your fave restaurant, hang your bag on the handbag hook or over your chair, don’t place it on the floor. As well as being grubby, floors are often rough surfaces and will potentially scratch the leather.
  • Wearing a bag often will inevitably result in rub marks over time where the leather brushes against your clothes. We recommend having your fave bags on high rotation to avoid constant rubbing and wear on one bag.
  • If your bag has a chain handle, dirt may accumulate in the chain links causing it to come off on your shoulder. You can avoid this by cleaning the chain with a small toothbrush or the corner of a soft cloth. Always store the chain inside the bag to avoid any scratching or indentations on the leather.
  • Brass or silverware cleaner will keep your fittings looking shiny. Take care not to get any on the bag!
  • Keep fasteners and zips running smoothly by running pencil lead over the open teeth of your zip.
  • Remember, leather does not like water. Wipe off a wet leather handbag immediately and let air dry. Never use a blow dryer to dry a bag.

STORAGE

To help your bag keep its shape, it is best to fill (but not overfill, remember…) your bag with cloth or bubble wrap and store it in the dust bag provided to keep it safe between outings. When your bag isn’t out and about, store it bag out of direct sunlight.
Take your bags out regularly and let them ‘breathe’ to prevent any dust and mildew forming.

A LITTLE TLC WILL ENSURE YOUR HANDBAG STAYS AROUND FOR LONGER. SHOW YOUR BAGS THE LOVE THEY DESERVE!
